Delhi municipal bodies paid Rs 1942.82 crore to ghost pensioners?

NEW DELHI: The chief auditor of municipal accounts has found that the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and one of its successor bodies, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, paid a whopping Rs 1,942.82 crore pension over 18 years to their employees without finding out if the beneficiaries were still alive or not.

The payments were made between 1998-99 and 2014-15 through Punjab National Bank and UCO Bank. The north corporation, justifiably, is alarmed.

The erstwhile MCD had deposited large funds in the Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar branches of PNB and UCO banks respectively.
After trifurcation, north corporation opened new accounts in the Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar branches and transferred funds.

"The pension cell released funds amounting to Rs 471.95 crore during 1998-99 to 2004-05, Rs 162 crore during 2005-06 to 2006-07 and Rs 1,205.28 crore during 2007-08 to 2012-13 to PNB and UCO banks for disbursement to the pensioners," the report said. The corporation again released Rs 103.59 crore to the two saving accounts in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

NEW DELHI: RBI Governor Urjit Patel on Wednesday faced some tough questions from MPs as he could not set a time frame for return of normalcy in the banking system.

However, the RBI Governor informed the MPs that the central bank had replaced Rs 9.2 lakh crore or 60 per cent of demonetised currency.

Also, Patel could not give a definite number of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 bills+ returned post demonetisation as RBI was still tabulating those.

Sources said the Governor was spared a tough grilling at the meeting of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance as senior MPs including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh intervened to say RBI as an institution needs to be respected.

Congress MPs like Digvijaya Singh wanted Patel to be specific in his replies on lifting of cash withdrawal restrictions and wanted to follow through with tougher questions but were prevented by Manmohan Singh and others, they said.

Patel, flanked by deputy governors R Gandhi and S S Mundra, explained to the members that discussions for demonetising high value currency notes between the government and the RBI had been going on since early 2016, and the central bank was in agreement with the government on the objective behind scrapping of the Rs 500/1000 notes.

Colo, the first-ever gorilla born in captivity, died in her sleep overnight, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium shared on Facebook.

She was recently diagnosed with cancer and had a surgery to remove a tumor just ahead of her record-breaking birthday on Dec. 22.

After six decades, Colo exceeded average life expectancy by more than 20 years. The zoo celebrated Colo's milestone by live-streaming her birthday party to fans all over the world, with thousands more turning up in person to give the primate their well wishes.

Kalyan youth who joined ISIS reportedly killed in Syria

MUMBAI: A 22-year-old youth from Kalyan in adjoining Thane district, who allegedly fled from home to join the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014, had been killed, a senior police official said here on Monday.

Aman Naeem Tandel was among the four youths from Kalyan who had left for Syria in 2014, purportedly to fight for the terror group ISIS.
"Tandel's father got a call informing about his death in Syria," the official said.

Aman's father Naeem Tandel, who lives in Govindwadi area of Kalyan, got a call late Saturday night from an unidentified number, the police official said.

Earlier this year, an ISIS video purportedly showing Aman among others and threatening to avenge the "killings of Muslims in Kashmir, Gujarat and Muzaffarnagar", had surfaced.
