Infosys loses over Rs 22k crore in market value after Sikka quits

New Delhi: Shares of Infosys ended sharply lower by nearly 10 percent on Friday, wiping out Rs 22,519 crore from its market valuation, after Vishal Sikka, the first non- founder CEO of the company, called it quits.

Sikka, 50, a former German IT major SAP executive under whose three-year tenure Infosys' revenue rose about 25 percent, did not name Murthy directly as the reason for his exit but said he faced "false, baseless, malicious and increasingly personal attacks".

Meanwhile, according to mutual fund research firm Morningstar, the market value of mutual fund holdings in Infosys stood at Rs 21,094 crore in July compared with Rs 16,376 crore in the same month last year.

"Infosys has been the favoured stock from the tech space, with 40 percent of the mutual fund industry's overall technology sector allocations being made in the IT major," said Kaustubh Belapurkar, Director Fund Research, Morningstar.

Air strikes, shelling strain Moscow-backed Damascus truce

Beirut: Air strikes killed at least nine people in the Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus overnight and insurgent shelling from the rebel-held area landed near the Russian embassy on Tuesday, a war monitor reported.

The fighting strained a Russian-backed truce in the area. The Syrian military declared a cessation of hostilities there on Saturday.

In a statement on its Facebook page, it put the number of wounded and missing at 50. The air strikes hit the area at 11 pm (2000 GMT), it said.

There was no immediate comment from the Syrian military on the report and no mention of air strikes by state media.

Witnesses said three mortar shells landed in the neighbourhood where the Russian embassy is located in northeastern Damascus. There were no reports of casualties.

The Syrian army, with military support from Russia and Iran, has dealt the opposition a string of defeats around the capital over the last year, seizing back control of areas including Daraya and Moadamiya.

Astrosat, Chandra and Hubble jointly detect massive cosmic explosion

Mumbai: Three space-based observatories Astrosat, Chandra, Hubble Space Telescope and a ground-based observatory HARPS have simultaneously detected a massive coronal explosion on the nearest planet-hosting star 'Proxima Centauri', a top scientist revealed here on Wednesday.

The chance detection on May 31 this year came during a planned joint multi-wavelength simultaneous observational campaign by these observatories studying the 'Proxima Centauri' group of stars which hosts an Earth-like habitable planet -- Proxima Centaur b -- orbiting within (Proxima Centauri) its habitable zone, said Professor K.P. Singh, a scientist from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here.

"Our nearest neighbour, 'Proxima Centauri', at 4.25 light years, is one such star with a spectral type M5.5 and hosting an Earth-like planet, Proxima Centauri b, orbiting within its habitable zone," said Singh.

However, the habitability of the planet depends on the high-energy radiation as a result of the chromospheric and coronal activity of the host star.

Astrosat is a multi-wavelength astronomy mission built by a consortium of institutes across India led by ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC, Bengaluru); TIFR, Mumbai; IIA, Bengaluru; Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram); Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA, Pune); and Space Applications Centre (SAC, Ahmedabad) in collaboration with University of Leicester (UK) and the Canadian Space Agency.

The Chandra programme is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Alabama (USA). The flight operations and the Chandra Science are controlled by the Smithsonian Astrophysics Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts (US).

Kolkata Presidency University student runs canteen in campus

Kolkata: A first year student of Presidency University has set up a mobile canteen in the campus offering fast food, favourite among the Gen Next.

"Instead of oil-dripping biriyani or regular full- course meal at other canteens, my cart offers quick grabs with which the present generation can instantly connect," Political Science student Raunak Kapoor told PTI.

His cart offers chicken sandwiches, cold coffee, noodles and the like. "We are regularly adding one thing or the other," said the 20-year-old student.

One of the patrons, History student Suman Das said, "Raunak is popular among students and polite to customers. His cart offers small grabs priced at Rs 10-20 and his strategy is more business-oriented."

Savouring noodles, English Honours student Debalina Chakraborty said, "Here the menu is similar to the ones we relish at coffee shops and hangout zones but for a cheaper price. Even a month back, we had to venture outside the campus to have Shikanji or other mocktails but not any more."

Raunak, who had 23 entrepreneurship projects in his school, said he now wished to expand the start-up to other institutions.

'Promod-da', owner of another canteen, said, "For regular meals, students visit our place. But I have best wishes for a young student."
